Bidwrangler no reserve podcast episode covers (18)

If you haven't had a chance to listen to the No Reserve Podcast lately, here's a quick catch-up. The show is now 22 episodes in, and Tim and Andy have been spending more time on the road, recording at our guests' auction facilities.

Episodes worth a listen

Inside the Sale of Blackmon Auctions with Thomas Blackmon Jr.

Blackmon Auctions goes back to 1937, when Thomas's grandfather took over a cattle barn auction in DeWitt, Arkansas. Thomas bought the company outright in 2013, and in 2025 his crew of 30 ran 78 auctions across 22 states. In April 2026, he sold the business to Ritchie Bros. He talks through two years of conversations with private equity and other buyers, why he turned down private equity, and what due diligence actually looked like. He's also honest about how it felt to sell something his grandfather started and his father built.

Mike "McGavel" Jones on 50 Years in the Auction Business

Mike Jones has seen just about every corner of this industry. He started calling auctions in high school, worked nights in radio to pay the bills, and got his big break liquidating hundreds of Western Auto and Montgomery Ward stores in the '80s. He later ran the auction division at United Country Real Estate and now runs three auction schools. He's also the first person to complete the NAA Triple Crown. Near the end, he explains why he thinks live and online simulcast together gets sellers the best results.

Island Rules: Building an Auction Business in Hawaii with John John Genovese

John John Genovese and his dad started Malama Auctions on Kauai 13 years ago. Their first sale was stocked with things they found for free on Craigslist and the side of the road. Early on, they walked neighborhoods handing out postcards because they couldn't afford postage. John John talks about moving to online only after noticing people in the room holding bidder cards while bidding on their phones. His advice for anyone making that switch: make your best sale the transition sale.

How a Consistent Schedule Built a Serious Auction Business with Leon Stoltzfus

Recorded on site at PA Auction Center in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Leon Stoltzfus explains how a five-auction-a-month schedule, which started as his dad's preference for routine, ended up keeping marketing costs low and giving buyers and consignors something to count on. About half their revenue now comes from online-only sales, but Leon makes a good case for why live auctions still matter where he is.
